Fumiya Odagawa (b. Kanagawa Prefecture, 1996) creates otherworldly scenes focused on the inner-most complexities of individuals in everyday life. Evoking feelings of unease, fluidity, and contemplation, Odagawa emphasizes the nuance and power of human emotion. Inspired by Edvard Munch, Peter Doig, Les Nabis and Cy Twombly, Odagawa finds solace in the beauty of the mundane.

Experience makes a person. I do not have any special experience. I am quite ordinary.  Regardless, I keep painting. I see people passing by, a dark purple color on a carpet, tin toys lined-up…I create my own world.

Odagawa studied Japanese Painting at the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2014. He graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School in 2022.
