Long Story Short is pleased to present Always Means Never Not, a solo presentation of paintings by Siobhan McBride. Depicting private interiors and spaces from personal experiences, McBride’s meticulous work oscillates between familiarity and strangeness. In an attempt to conjure memories, the paintings expand beyond their concrete dimensions and unfold into worlds entirely of their own.

Curated by Stavroula Coulianidis, the exhibition journeys through McBride’s most recent body of work. Aiming to strike an anticipatory tone, objects seem to be paused and pockets of space vulnerable, leaving room for tension between fragmentation and unification. Referencing intimate life moments, such as confronting personal relationships or searching for her biological identity in South Korea, the paintings explore anticipation, intangibility, and ambiguity. The tight and twisted scenes comprised of flat matte surfaces, sharp edges and gradients in motion, aim to challenge both the artists’ and viewers perspective.

Siobhan McBride was born in Seoul, South Korea and adopted to Queens, NY as an infant. She continues to live and work in New York. She received her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. Her work has exhibited in several solo exhibitions including the Roswell Museum and Art Center, NURTUREart and the University of Maine Museum of Art. Residencies and grant support include the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Workspace Program, PSC CUNY, Jentel, the Vermont Studio Center, the Roswell Artist in Residence Program, Yaddo, Marble House Project, and the Sam and Adele Golden Artist Residency Program. This is her first exhibition with Long Story Short, New York.
